Family Tree Research
At Ancestry Victoria, we take a professional attitude to the
service
we provide for you.
We consider our time, effort
and expertise is worth paying for. We love the
research but it appears many people feel this service should be free.
If you are happy to pay for research, we are very happy to work
with you in preparing your Family tree.
It’s true you can find a lot of things on the internet but not
everything.
Research takes real time, if it was easy we wouldn’t be still
researching for years and years to complete our own family tree.

Our Family Tree Archival Service is available if you have that shoebox of names and dates
etc.
The most important matter is to find accurate information.
Each piece of data must be confirmed, with
collateral being necessary as far as possible. If more than two records agree with each other, so much the
better.
There are many types of records, and they can
provide valuable data. All facts should be verified and the source of documents
noted.
How much of your family tree is the product
of personal memory?
What details have ever been
investigated?
Do you know who the people are in old family
photos?
Does a family member have old stuff that
appears worthless to them?
Where to start? Basically it does not matter,
as long as you start.
Ask family members what they recall. Make
thorough notes, scans, recordings or videos. These are some of the best clues
available.
Almost immediately, you need
software to gather the data, and to
be able to know who or what relates to who else. It is just too complex to do it by
hand.
One good early point would be birth, christening, marriage, death, burial
and cemetery records.
In England, census record started in 1841, and then conducted every 10
years. These have a large amount of data.
In Australia, there is a magnificent collection of history at a website
called Trove, compiled by the National Library of Australia.
The range of resources is endless, so you need to decide which to use.
Free sources should not be ignored, as most us need to watch the budget.
The largest and best-known resource is ancestry.com.au. The
advertise the most, and area great early resource to use.
However, you must beware! Biggest is not always best, and the certainly do
not have all the bases covered. Information that you need can be only found
elsewhere.
No source of data should be accepted without attempting to verify all the
facts. The more accurate data is found by viewing scans of original
documents.
